In the heart of Sicily, the town of Niscemi is the headquarters of an American satellite base called the Mobile User Objective System, or MUOS. The once peaceful territory is now marred by enormous antennas, endless fences and an invasive military presence. Despite their opposition to the project, the citizens have failed to stop its development and now live with the consequences of electromagnetic waves on the ecosystem, but also on their health. Among them, Valentina, a young hypersensitive woman who takes care of her elderly parents, increasingly suffers from the loss of an idyllic life, suffocated by MUOS. Under the oppressive buzz of antennas and insects, she dreams of escaping the arid landscapes to finally let her independence flourish. (SC)
In the section Rough Cut Pitch – Contre courant :
“On the Serbian border” by Federico Cammarata and Filippo Foscarini – Produced by Stefano Centini (Volos Films)
November 26th at 10:45 – Cinématheque Québécoise – Hall Fernand Seguin
In the Serbian forest, near the Hungarian border, a clan of Afghan migrants hides in the darkness. Over the course of a long night in this extreme limbo, the walls between their world and ours almost disappear.
The Rough Cut Pitch, already Rough Cut Lab, offers a privileged space for projects in the editing or post-production phase. This activity offers directors and producers a unique platform to present their works at a crucial stage of their development. The structure allows for in-depth interaction with speakers and industry professionals, providing participants with constructive feedback and strategic advice for the finalization and distribution of their films.
Invited to the event by the Institute, Beatrice Fiorentino, Director of Critics’ Week at the Venice Biennale and Stefano Tealdi director and producer of the STEFILM.
The RIDM festival, supported by the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal, will take place from November 20 to December 1, 2024. This annual meeting aims to present to the public and film professionals a selection of the best documentaries made at national and international level.
