Exhibition dedicated to the paintings of Sandra Morellato. Exhibited for the first time at the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Montreal with a series of works dedicated to the human figure, the exhibition will be inaugurated on March 23rd 2022.
“A bit like Bontempelli’s “Minnie la Candida”, Sandra Morellato wanders among the confetti as well as the distortions of an era without dreams with only one and unchanged attitude: the childlike naivety of those who see the world without malice and draw it more and more beautiful and more alive than this appears to us others. It is no coincidence that we must go back to Bontempelli and the beginning of the last century to find a pictorial freshness which, if it is still possible at the time of the first avant-gardes, becomes outdated in the very moment in which painting wants to become cerebral and political.
None of this, however, in Morellato’s paintings, where the quick and Fauvist gesture of Matissian memory blends a naive and almost Orphic charm (the Sonia Delaunays, which is to say the women who are cultric of liminal linguistic hybridizations, are often the more romantic beasts). And then the nude, obviously, a massive nude, Michelangelo-like and therefore male, but also – and almost paradoxically – enveloping and soft, a nude that is therefore contrary to that demeaning, vampire, anguished tradition that goes from Edvard Munch to Lucien Freud , obviously up to the horrifying visions of Francis Bacon. The evils of the world do not scathe Sandra Morellato; she doesn’t ignore them (… it seems), but she gladly leaves them outside the door!” (Alessandro Giardino, Associate Professor at Saint Lawrence University – Author of Sindrome di Caravaggio, Magmata 2021 Editions)
Born in Montreal, Sandra spent memorable summers traveling to Italy, where she fell in love with the wonderful architecture and landscapes of her parents’ native Veneto region. She is a graduate of McGill University’s School of Architecture, she has worked for several years in the fields of architecture and interior design. Her works have been exhibited at Art Basel in Florida, Dallas Contemporary, Montreal and Québec City.
