Thanks to the support of the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal, le Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie presents an extraordinary photographic exhibition: “Kochan” by Alessandra Calò.
Kochan, name of the photographic project that Alessandra Calò began in 2016 when she discovered that the New York Public Library had put a large part of her archival documents online. You spend whole days in maps, manuscripts and letters. But it is from her maps that she is attracted to her and she, accompanied by their signs and their traces, she decides to combine them with a series of self-portraits. Kochan is a name: that of the protagonist of Confessioni di una maschera (Yukio Mishima, 1949). A sort of travel diary, which accompanies the reader to discover fragments of the protagonist’s life and identity.

Alessandra Calò works and lives in Reggio Emilia (Italy). She is an artist and photographer, since the beginning of her career she has been experimenting with the use of new languages that allow her to explore themes related to memory, identity and the language of photography itself. The dominant practice in her work is re-appropriation: the recovery and reinterpretation of archival materials through which the artist does not intend to carry out a nostalgic re-enactment of the past but to propose a new vision of reality. He has participated in exhibitions and festivals in Italy and abroad: Circulation (s) Festival de la jeune photographie européenne (Paris), Les rencontres (Arles), Fotografia Europea (Reggio Emilia), Open House (Rome), Festival Filosofia (Modena). Over the years she has specialized in ancient photographic printing techniques and in the creation of real installations. You have created numerous artist books and works, some of which have become part of important collections and published in trade magazines. In 2018 she won the Tribew publishing award as part of the Circulation (s) festival; in 2017 she received an honorable mention from her IPA International Photographic Award and in 2016 she won the Combat Prize for the sculpture and installation section. For the 2018 Contemporary Day, the Italian Cultural Institute of Madrid dedicates her first solo exhibition in Spain, at Palacio de Abrantes, a site-specific installation entitled El Jardín Secreto, at the end of the research path started during the artistic residency. for the project L’arte che verrà (2017).
Under the Espoir radical theme, the 13° Rencontres de la photographie en Gaspésie will take place this summer in 12 municipalities, cities and national parks on the peninsula. Presented mainly outdoors, the 18 exhibitions and installations will show the work of 16 artists from Québec and abroad. The vast majority of them will be held from 15 July to 30 September 2022.
