Anita Aloisio, Giovanni Princigalli and Roberto Zorfini at the 5th edition of the Festival Cinéma du monde of Sherbrooke.

The Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal is pleased to announce that thanks to the fruitful collaboration undertaken with the Festival Cinéma du monde of Sherbrooke, it will present in the section Italian Cinema Special program, three Italian-Canadian artists will make you discover the immigrant experience across generations, as well as the human journey of five Italian directors among those who have most influenced the artistic and social structure from here. Come meet three filmmakers about their work, two short films both touching and funny, and a documentary. Here is the program of short films presented in the presence of the directors:

La Fiancée by Giovanni Princigalli

TRAMA – On a summer Sunday in Montreal, an eighty-year-old Italian named Carolina meets Yolaine, a thirty-year-old Cuban. In the 1950s, Carolina was married to a Québécois man with Italian roots. Yolaine has come to Montreal to rejoin Frank—another Québécois of Italian background—who is showing himself to be macho and aggressive. While it is too late for Carolina to alter her own destiny, she still might be able to have an impact on Yolaine’s.

Giovanni Princigalli, graduated in political science in Italy and Cinema at the Université de Montréal, he was trained as a documentary filmmaker in Paris and Italy. In addition to “Les fleur à la fenêtre” (2010), he produced two documentaries “Japiga gagì” (2003) and “Ho fatto il mio coraggio” (2009), screened at numerous festivals around the world. He has taught Italian Cinema at McGill University and holds a screenwriting course at the Université de Montréal. Italian resident in Montreal since 2003, ethnographer and filmmaker, has produced several documentaries presented in Africa, Cuba, South America, etc., winning numerous awards

Mannaggiamerica by Roberto Zorfini

TRAMA – A simple homemade spaghettis’ sauce scatters a conversation between new and old immigration.The comedy that highlights the difficulties of immigration no matter when it took place. Mannaggiamerica!!!

Roberto Zorfini, is an Italian director who moved to Montréal in 2010. In 1995 he graduated from the Roberto Rossellini Institute for Cinematography and Television in Rome. Has more than 20 years of experience in the field of video projects and worked for almost a decade with the Italian television RAI. In 2013, his short film “Imperfetto Equilibrio” received a special prize at the Italian Contemporary Film Festival (Toronto). In Canada, he has created commercials for several companies and has worked as a creative director for Panoramitalia. After working as author for RAI World, he won the first prize in 2014 at the 48 Hour Film Project in Ottawa with the short film “Alice“.

Creatori d’Italicita by Anita Aloisio

TRAMA – This short film highlights five Canadian Italian directors which have influenced the artistic and social fabric of Quebec and Canadian society over the past 40 years. Paul Tana, Nicola Zavaglia, Antonio D’Alfonso, Giulia Frati and Agata de Santis will present unprecedented novels whose opinions and experiences diverge but converge towards a Quebecoise township.

Anita Aloisio, Italian-Canadian director, is the author of documentary films. Her first movie “Straniera come donna” (A Woman, Stranger, 2002) was co-produced with the Québec Immigration Ministry, while the film “Les enfants de la loi 101” (Growing up with Bill 101, 2007) has generated heated discussions and still remains highly controversial. In 2016 received a Masters in Communication and Media Studies at Concordia University in Montreal and is currently involved in the production of two projects: “Basilicata Secrets” and “Le Québec de Calliari“.
