Primavera Molisana – Come and discover the Molise region, in the heart of Italy – ”A vije du Molise” Molise’s dialect through linguistics, history and poetry

Primavera Molisana is an event designed to celebrate the cultural, natural, and artistic richness of the fascinating Molise region. Through a series of unique events, the festival offers the chance to discover and appreciate the region in all its authenticity. The program includes two films, a documentary telling local stories and traditions, and a concert. An unmissable opportunity to discover and experience the magic of Molisan culture.

A panel discussion between Professor Dario Brancato and Jordan Black, moderated by Cassandra Marsillo. A vije du Molise, meaning “the road to Molise,” comes from a poem by Giose Rimanelli. In this panel, Brancato and Black will discuss the place of dialects in Italy from a linguistic and historical point of view, with a special focus on the context of Molise and the use of dialect in literary works.

Dario Brancato is a Professor in the Department of Classics, Modern Languages and Linguistics at Concordia University. He has a PhD in Italian Linguistics from the University of Toronto. His current research spans across disciplines, focusing on Italian philology and historical linguistics, reception of Classics in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and book history between the fourteenth and the seventeenth century.

Jordan Black is a linguist from Montreal, Canada who grew up speaking the dialect of Larino, Campobasso. He has a bachelor’s degree in Linguistics and Political Science from Concordia University and a master’s degree in Linguistics from the University of Oxford. As LengaLonga on Instagram, he strives to showcase how the local language of Molise has grown beyond its original borders and adapted to the modern age.

Cassandra Marsillo is a public historian, artist, and writer, based in Tiohtià:ke (Montreal), telling and listening to stories about immigration, identity, collective memory, food, and folklore, particularly in relation to the Italian-Canadian experience and traditions from my family’s region, Molise.
