The Italian Cultural Institute in Montreal is pleased to present the series of conversations entitled “What remains. The voices”, created by Francesco D’Arelli, Vito Teti and Demetrio Paolin. “What remains” is the opportunity for dialogue and thought, which involves writers, writers, photographers, artists … and aspires to be a different way of inhabiting space and stopping along the network.

The writer Alessandro Zaccuri participating in “What remains”, who gives voice to his thoughts and converses with Demetrio Paolin, writer, Vito Teti, anthropologist and full professor at the University of Calabria, and Francesco D’Arelli, Director of the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal. A. Zaccuri is not only one of our best novelists, but he is also an acute essayist, with a different look at literary and social phenomena. Starting from two of his works In terra deconsacrata (Bompiani, 2008) and Non tutto è da buttare. Arte e racconto della spazzatura (La Scuola, 2016) defines a precise question: in contemporary culture is the Christian imagination a remnant or an excess?
Alessandro Zaccuri was born in La Spezia in 1963, lives and works in Milan. He is a journalist for the newspaper Avvenire, deals mainly with literature and culture. He made his debut as a storyteller in 2003 with Milano, la città di nessuno (L ’Ancora del Mediterraneo, Biella Literature and Industry Award). With Mondadori, the novels Il signor figlio (2007, Campiello Selection award), Infinita notte (2009) and Dopo il miracolo (2012, Basilicata and Frignano awards) were released. He then published Lo spregio (Marsilio, 2016, Comisso and Mondello Giovani awards) and Nel nome (NNE, 2019). He is the author of numerous essays, including Citazioni pericolose. Il cinema come critica letteraria (Fazi, 2000), In terra sconsacrata. Perché l’immaginario è ancora cristiano (Bompiani, 2008), Francesco. Il cristianesimo semplice di papa Bergoglio (Il melangolo, 2014), Non è tutto da buttare. Arte e racconto della spazzatura (La Scuola, 2016) and Come non letto. 10 classici + 1 che possono ancora salvare il mondo (Ponte alle Grazie, 2017). He collaborates with many magazines, including Vita and Pensiero.
Vito Teti is the founder and current director of the Centre for the Study of the Anthropologies and the Literatures of the Mediterranean at the University of Calabria, where he also holds the chair in cultural anthropology. In his research he has devoted particular attention to the eating habits of the peoples of the Mediterranean area, to the anthropology of travel and migration, to rituals and feasts in traditional and contemporary societies, to the representations of the Italian South. He is the author of various collections of essays, of historical novels, of short stories (which have been translated in English, French and Spanish), as well as of photo reportages and ethnographic documentaries. Among his most recent publications are Pietre di pane (Quodlibet, 2011; Stones into bread, Guernica Editions, 2018); Il patriota e la maestra (Quodlibet, 2012) Maledetto Sud (Einaudi, 2013; Fine pasto. Il cibo che verrà (Einaudi 2015); Terra Inquieta. Antropologia dell’erranza meridionale, (Rubbettino, 2015); Storia del peperoncino. Demetrio Paolin, born in Canelli, lives in Turin. He collaborates with Corriere della Sera. He wrote some essays and novels. With Conforme alla Gloria (Voland, 2016) he was among the 12 finalists at the 2016 Strega award. Anatomia di un profeta (Voland, 2020) is his latest novel.
