The Italian cellist Luigi Piovano and the Italian bassoon Carlo Colombo at the Virée classique OSM

The Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal is proud to announce the participation of the Italian cellist Luigi Piovano and bassoon player Carlo Colombo to the 6th edition of the Viree classique, organized by the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, that will take place from August 10 to 13, 2017.

Schubert, Piano Quintet in A major, D. 667, “Trout”

Written when Schubert was only 22, this Piano Quintet is one of the composer’s most popular pieces, owing to its famous theme and variations on the lied Die forelle (The Trout).
A charming work that incorporates the double bass in an innovative way, it is performed by great musicians who come together specially for the occasion!

Discover the orchestra with Prokofiev’s symphonic fairy tale Peter and the Wolf and follow the adventures of its different characters, each of which is associated with an instrument, for instance, the strings (Peter), the French horn (the Wolf), or the bassoon (the Grandfather). The concert also showcases the bassoon, with the world premiere of a work specially written by Simon Leclerc for this event. A great way for families to share their love of music.

Brahms, Double Concerto for Violin and Cello, op. 102 (approx. 32 min.)

The Double Concerto for Violin and Cello was Brahms’ last symphonic composition. The virtuoso appeal and lyricism of this mature work are complemented by folk elements – notably the influence of Gypsy music – so dear to this towering Romantic composer.

Luigi Piovano is the first cellist of the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. Graduated from cello at age 17 with highest honors under the guidance of Radu Aldulescu and since then his career has not stopped. For several years he was a member of the Michelangelo Quartet and was first cellist of the Italian Concerto Group; in 1999 he was chosen by Maurizio Pollini to participate in the “Pollini Project” at the Salzburg Festival, taken up in 2001 at Carnegie Hall in New York, in Tokyo in 2002 and Rome in 2003. He has performed as a soloist with leading orchestras and since 2002, founded the Chamber Orchestra of Campania, also became increasingly involved in the management. After the great success achieved in 2013 by directing the group of Arches National Academy Orchestra of Santa Cecilia, Piovano initiated stable three-year collaboration at the head of the Arches Santa Cecilia.

Born in Padua, Italy, Carlo Colombo has served as Principal Bassoon of the Lyon National Opera Orchestra since its inception in 1983. From 1978 to 1981 he was Principal Bassoon of the ensemble I Solisti Veneti, and has performed as guest principal bassoon with many European orchestras including the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, the Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the NDR Orchestra in Hamburg, the Orchestre de Paris, and the Bayerische Rundfunk. Faculty member of the Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique de Lyon since 2001, Mr.Colombo joined the faculty at the Lausanne Conservatory in Switzerland in 2005.
