“The travelling Genius”, Giovanni Capriotti – “Da Roma alla ricerca del mondo”

The series of encounters entitled “The travelling Genius : Italians Art, humanities, science … in the world”, is a space for discussion and cultural dialogue that the Italian Cultural Institute has developed especially for young Italians in world. Italians who, beyond any orientation, are the bearers of knowledge accumulated in Italy and diffuse the following, even without their knowledge, a provision or a vocation of ancient origin: the generous exchange of culture, comforted by a keen sense of human comprehension.

I set forth on my path as a human being, and a nascent documentary photographer, from Rome, inspired by the magic, history and rawness of the city. I approach each journey as a basic need and I am inspired by the ancestral mobility of humanity. Despite my restless lifestyle, I regularly return to Rome. Most often through my vivid imagination and memories, and physically every time I have the chance to cross the big pond. Arrivals and departures are literally the bread and butter of my trade, however the same pattern applies to the stories I try to tell through stills and moving images. I like to call myself a photographic essayist, more interested in the roots and causes than the effects. My visual stories unfold, respecting the events, yet trying to organize them within a larger narrative off the media’s beaten tracks. Please excuse me if I can neither stop myself nor my endless curiosity.

Giovanni Capriotti  is a photographic essayist and editorial photographer/videographer pursuing long-form visual narratives with a focus on socio-cultural issues. His independent work explores the human condition across North America and the world, with an interest on unique and intimate stories that often go unnoticed. Born and raised in Rome, he moved to Amsterdam and London after finishing high school, attracted by the vibrant and creative 90s scene. Passion for photography has always been part of his life, although at the beginning he could not afford to buy a decent camera and instead was experimenting with polaroids and vintage models, such as the old Yashica that his granny found at the pension where she used to work.

After a few months in the UK he enrolled in a photography BFA at the London College of Communication, which helped him to organize everything he had learned as a self taught photographer. Newly graduated, the mandatory national service called him back to his native Italy. After one year spent serving his country and two more on the road in Europe, he got a job with a major airline, which drastically increased his chances to travel worldwide. He eventually fell in love with documentary photography and over a decade of voyaging he was able to produce a solid body of work.
