Duration: 126 min
Following Israel’s 2009 operation Cast Lead on the agricultural neighbourhood of Zeitoun in Gaza, the Samouni family, victim of the bombardments, loses their kin, livelihood and ancestral landscape. Acclaimed filmmaker Stefano Savona visits the family a year after the events, collecting all of the memories of the large farming clan torn apart by war and politics it can’t escape. What Savona cannot capture with his camera, an intricate and mesmerizing black and white animation pieces together the past and the present, including the harrowing moments when the Samouni’s life is changed forever. Samouni Road brings to life a very human portrait of people living in fear, loss and hope under ongoing occupation.

A symphonic audio-visual journey through the places (and workers) that represent the lifecycle of the objects around us: Beautiful Things (RIDM official selection, 2018) is undoubtedly one of the year’s most aesthetically accomplished works. Rarely has a film been so seamlessly complemented by a virtual reality experience. From oil-bearing deserts to an enormous cargo ship, from an acoustic chamber resembling a space ship to the spectacular machinery of a wasteprocessing centre, Denoise invites us to dive even deeper into the hypnotic ambiance of these otherworldly places, head and headset inhabited by the thoughts of the solitary men who work there.

Where do they come from and where do they go? Federico Biasin and Giorgio Ferrero examine the countless inanimate objects in our lives through a four fold portrait: four men, four jobs, four steps in the hidden world of consumerism. From oil exploration to a massive cargo ship, from an electro-acoustic testing chamber to a waste-sorting facility, the filmmakers seek out the solitary workers who make our Western way of life possible. They transform the journey into an audiovisual symphony, driven by spectacular images and captivating music and sound. Avoiding banality or lecturing, this unusual, multi award-winning essay is an unsettling reflection on our world.
