Of all the artistic disciplines, fashion has been the most radical in accepting the invitation of the modern avant-garde to make art and life coincide. Not only is the work of art – the dress – no longer an object of contemplation, but it must adhere to and coincide with the living body (every day, all day), but this artwork is by definition addressed to the whole population without distinction of classes, genders, opinions. It is precisely for this reason that fashion has become the contemporary laboratory of the production of moral and social identities. Through examples taken from the history of haute couture and prêt-à-porter, the talk aims to understand what it means to make life an object of aesthetic manipulation.
Emanuele Coccia is Associate Professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences sociales, Paris, since 2011, after being Assistant Professor at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau (2008-2011). He was invited research fellow and professor at the University of Tokyo (2009), Buenos Aires (2010), Düsseldorf (2013) and at the Columbia University (2015-2016). Among his publications: La trasparenza delle immagini. Averroè e l’averroismo (Milan 2005, Spanish translation 2008); La vie sensible (Paris 2010; translated into English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian) and Le bien dans les choses (Paris 2013; translated into Spanish and Italian; German, English and Portuguese translation forthcoming). With Giorgio Agamben he edited a comprehensive anthology of texts on angels across the Abrahamic traditions (Angeli. Ebraismo Cristianesimo Islam, Vicenza 2009).
