How do we choose words to express an idea naturally and effectively? Collocations, combinations of words that tend to appear together, are the basis of fluid and appropriate communication. Expressions like gioia incontenibile, amara sorpresa, perdere tempo or fugare un dubbio are not random, but the result of shared linguistic conventions. But even an unnatural juxtaposition can make a sentence sound strange or inauthentic. Comprehensible language relies on the ability to carefully choose the right combinations of words. So, how do we identify the right collocations? Are there specific rules? Why do collocations vary from one language to another?
We will discuss this with Paola Tiberii, author of the Dizionario delle collocazioni Zanichelli, a reference tool designed to support effective lexical choice in Italian.
