BROS embodies the community, the strength that emerges from the group in power. About thirty policemen in dark uniforms take over the stage. Chosen through a public call and not trained for their roles, these dehumanized men, actors and spectators of their actions, submit to the rules of the game and to the execution of orders received in real time via an earpiece. The scenes take shape, in many Rembrandtian tableaux that reveal the false foundations of appearances, the dark side of logic, the incoherence of the image, the lack of imagination and self-confidence. Mental images then take possession of a vaporous space, in a total syncretism that generates a new language: enigmatic, obscure and composed of figures that always refer to something else, like hieroglyphics. Not without recalling Orwellian dystopias, Milgram’s disturbing psychological experiment or Hannah Arendt’s philosophical work on the “banality of evil”, Romeo Castellucci captures the experience of alienation on stage and paints the brutality of fascism with an unprecedented pictorial, poetic and political force.
