“The travelling Genius”, Franco Cascella – The paradoxes of a sustainable energy consumption: a personal view

The series of encounters entitled “The travelling Genius : Italians Art, humanities, science … in the world”, is a space for discussion and cultural dialogue that the Italian Cultural Institute has developed especially for young Italians in world. Italians who, beyond any orientation, are the bearers of knowledge accumulated in Italy and diffuse the following, even without their knowledge, a provision or a vocation of ancient origin: the generous exchange of culture, comforted by a keen sense of human comprehension.

“A paradox (from the Greek παρα´, beyond, and δoξα ´ , expectation), is a statement that, despite its correctness, cannot be accepted because it is selfcontradictory and logically unacceptable. Even if their origin is quite unclear, a comprehensive list of paradoxes has been firstly proposed by Zeno of Elea (ca. 490–430 BC): nonetheless, the use of paradox has become common in several and different fields of study, from quantum mechanics to medicine. In this presentation, I will try to list the paradoxes due to the use of both renewable and non-renewable energy sources. In most cases, these paradoxes represent problems to whom it is hard to find a reliable and sustainable solution. Nonetheless, a deep knowledge of these paradoxes is mandatory, as it is the necessary condition to apply the proper energy policies. In this way, we will be able to spot the strategies to exploit energy sources in an efficient and ethical way.”

Franco Cascella obtained his bachelor degree in Energy engineering at the Politecnico di Milano. Later, in the framework of the double-degree programs, he moved to Montreal, where he conducted a research on direct contact heat exchangers at Polytechnique Montreal, where he obtained his master degree. Today, Franco Cascella is a PhD student enrolled at Sherbrooke University: his research focuses on the improvement of the energy efficiency in aluminium smelters.
