The series of encounters entitled “The travelling Genius : Italians Art, humanities, science … in the world“, is a space for discussion and cultural dialogue that the Italian Cultural Institute has developed especially for young Italians in world. Italians who, beyond any orientation, are the bearers of knowledge accumulated in Italy and diffuse the following, even without their knowledge, a provision or a vocation of ancient origin: the generous exchange of culture, comforted by a keen sense of human comprehension.

We often hear how digital technology has deeply and quickly changed the world forever. However, an even bigger revolution is on its way, and it goes under the name of synthetic biology. Synthetic biology is the engineering of biological systems and has the potential of harnessing the intrinsic power of life for our own purposes: biomedicine, bioremediation, or a greener approach to chemical synthesis, to name a few. Synthetic biology is a reality and is going to change the world: be prepared for it!
Dr. Daniela Quaglia, Ph.D., is a Postdoctoral Researcher in biocatalysis/synthetic biology at Université de Montréal in the laboratory of Prof. Joelle Pelletier. Her current project (co-funded by NSERC and the industrial partner DSM) focuses on the use of enzyme engineering to generate improved biocatalysts to be used in the food industry. Daniela earned her Bachelor degree in chemistry and her Masters in chemistry of biological molecules at Università degli Studi di Firenze in Italy. She then pursued her doctorate in biocatalysis at University College Dublin, in Ireland where her work focused on the study of the enzyme Horse Liver Alcohol Dehydrogenase and its application in the synthesis of anti-inflammatory drugs. She then moved to the UK, where she worked both in industry (at Synthace, a synthetic biology company in London) and academia, as a Research Associate in biocatalysis in the laboratory of Prof. Nick Turner at the University of Manchester. Daniela has also been involved in teaching at undergraduate level both in Dundalk Institute of Technology (Ireland) and in the Manchester Metropolitan University (Manchester). Furthermore, she is an avid science communicator: in the past, she won a prestigious NatureJobs writing competition and she writes regularly for high-reputation blogs, such as the Huffington Post. She has served until last December as Community Editor for the PLOSSynbio blog (of the PLOS Publishing Group) and you can follow her on Twitter (@Dny_Q). You can read more about her on her website: www.danielaquaglia.com.
