EUNIC Montréal: European Year of Cultural Heritage. A Day of Lectures on the “Conservation and cultural heritage: Archaeology and Ancient Monuments”

The Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal and the members of the EUNIC Montréal cluster (Goethe-Institut, Consulat général de France, Consulat général d’Espagne, Forum Culturel Autrichien à Ottawa, Instituto Camões) are pleased to present, in collaboration with the Musée Pointe-à-Callière, cité d’archéologie et d’histoire de Montréal, a day of study on “The conservation of cultural heritage: archeology and ancient monuments“, an event aimed at celebrating the European Year of Cultural Heritage.

The planned interventions will cover methods and techniques for the conservation of cultural heritage, considering in particular climate change, the preservation of outdoor archaeological sites, the contribution of information and digital sciences. In addition to Canadian researchers (Louise Pothier e Hendrik van Gijseghem, Musée Pointe-à-Callière, cité d’archéologie et d’histoire de Montréal; Julien Riel-Salvatore, Université de Montréal; James Woollett, Université Laval, Québec), eminent scholars from five European countries will take part in the day, in particular: Pilar Fatás (Museo Nacional y Centro de Investigación de Altamira, Spagna), Franziska Fecher (Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, Germania), Gerda Koch (Europeana Local Austria, Austria), Jean-Marc Mignon (Service archéologique de Vaucluse, Francia) and Massimo Osanna (Parco Archeologico di Pompei, Italia). Massimo Osanna, Director General of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii and Professor of Classical Archeology at the University of Naples “Federico II”, has the honor to inaugurate the day with a lecture on “Pompeii: discoveries and scientific research”.

Massimo Osanna has been Superintendent since 2014 and the new Director General since 2016 of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, which also includes the archaeological sites of Oplontis, Stabiae and Boscoreale. Previously, he was Professor of Classical Archaeology and then Director of the School of Specialisation in Archaeological Heritage at the University of Basilicata, Matera, and since 2015 is Professor of Classical Archaeology at the Università degli Studi di Napoli “Federico II”. He is particularly distinguished in the field of archaeological research in Southern Italy. Between 2007 and 2008 he was Superintendent for the Archaeological Heritage of Basilicata. Over the course of his career, he has also been Visiting Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Heidelberg and at the École Normale Supérieure de Paris, as well as winner of the Alexander von Humboldt-Stipendium scholarship at the Humboldt-Universität of Berlin.
