Conference in French
The meeting between Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt took place eight centuries ago, in 1219. More than celebrating a centenary, the cycle of conferences, organized by the Italian Cultural Institute and the Center d’études médiévales of the Université de Montréal, bringing together scholars of various disciplines, all of high profile and international fame, wants to bring the public closer to meaning of this extraordinary event for contemporaries and for posterity, up to us.
Moreover, the meeting between Francis of Assisi and the Sultan al-Malik is, also and above all, the story of his representations and the scraps of interpretation that he has known in the past eight centuries, from contemporary sources to the event up to our years restless, obviously passing through the famous Dante’s triplets.
John Tolan is a world-known scholar of religious and cultural contacts, conflicts and convergences between the Arab worlds and Latin in the Middle Ages. He is the author of the best recent synthesis on the meeting of 1219 (Le Saint chez le sultan. La rencontre de François d’Assise et de Islam: huit siècles Interprétation, Paris, Seuil, 2007, translated into Italian as The Saint from sultan: the meeting of Francis of Assisi and Islam, Rome-Bari, Laterza, 2009). In 2018 he published the Mahomet Européen. Histoire des représentations du Prophète en Occident (Paris, Albin Michel).
