In 1966 in Rome, two brothers, Nicola and Matteo Carati, fell in love with the pretty Giorgia, suffering from mental disorders. After they had smuggled her back to her father, the venture fails and Giorgia must return to the clinic. This incident triggers a breakdown: Nicola continued his psychiatric studies and travels, while Matthew, failed his exams, joins the army. Later, the two brothers find themselves in a flooded Florence, where Nicola meets Giulia, an ardent political activist. A little girl, Sara, is born from their union, but the couple is on the brink of the abyss. Matteo a policeman, met a Mirella photographer in Palermo, but chose to live alone. Years pass and the history of the Carat fits painfully that of Italy.
