“Entre les Cartes” – Exhibition by Alberto Porro

Alberto Porro

Entre les Cartes showcases a selection of works by Alberto Porro from his Card Paintings series, created between 2022 and 2025. In this body of work, Porro investigates the symbolic and expressive potential of playing cards, juxtaposing them with everyday textures—milk cartons, wallpapers, urban façades— that reveal subtle connections between the ordinary and the symbolic.

The series takes inspiration from the visual traditions of Italy, reinterpreting historical regional decks through the lens of Metafisica and Realismo Magico. What begins as an inquiry into identity and Italian diaspora gradually expands toward a broader reflection on shared imagery and cross-cultural narratives, by incorporating European decks such as the Cuckoo cards — once common across the continent and now surviving in a few Italian and Scandinavian regions.

In his most recent paintings, the artist turns to the esoteric and psychoanalytic dimension: the cards now serve as instruments through which dreams, memories, and subconscious visions take visual form. Echoing Alejandro Jodorowsky’s idea of tarot as a mirror of the self, Porro transforms the act of painting into a space for introspection and imaginative exploration.
