The Italian Cultural Institute in Montreal and Guernica Editions are pleased to present the book by Anita Aloisio, Basilicata Secrets. A Culinary Journey (2021), a unique journey through unforgettable scents, flavors and sounds of the joyful kitchens of the lesser-known Basilicata villages. The presentation will be attended by the author, Anita Aloisio, Connie Guzzo McParland, President of Guernica Editions, and Francesco D’Arelli, director of the Italian Cultural Institute in Montreal.

A memorable journey, which Anita Aloisio also tells with images and which she describes with living words: “The project went beyond the shooting of the creation of random recipes. We witnessed, in real time, how the soul of the Southern way of being reflected in every dish. We were touched by the smells and sounds emanating from the kitchens of the towns of Basilicata, and by the dedication and genuine passion that chefs and cooks have shown in the preparation of their creations”.
Anita Aloisio is a documentary filmmaker and media cultural correspondent. Since obtaining her BA in Communications Studies, Anita, one of only a few female Italian-Canadian filmmakers, wrote and directed two documentary films. Her films and media work revolve around issues of immigration, language, culture, and politics specific to Quebecois and Canadian society. In addition to her independent cinematic works, in 2016, Anita obtained her Master’s degree in Media Studies. Her areas of research focus on the Italian-Quebecois and Canadian experience. Her first film, Straniera come donna. A woman, a stranger (2002) was co-produced with the support of the Ministry of Immigration and the NFB. In 2019, she founded the “Alliance Donne Italian Women of Quebec,” an organization that advocates for the representation and valorization of the accomplishments women of Italian heritage have made in various sectors. In her leisure time, Anita enjoys dance, reading and, of course, cooking.
