The Italian Embassy in Ottawa, the Italian Consulate General in Montreal and the Italian Cultural Institutes in Montreal and Toronto celebrate the Italian Research Day in the World.
Scheduled for April 15th – Leonardo da Vinci’s birth date – GRIM intends to give visibility to all Italian researchers abroad, enhancing their contribution in the most diversified sectors of science and innovation.
For this sixth 2023 edition, the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal and the Consulate General of Italy in Montreal organize a meeting dedicated to the themes of Research and Innovation in the Arctic.

The Arctic, a region with a very low population density but rich in considerable resources, is the place where climate change is on average four times faster than in other regions of the world and has very high environmental, social and economic impacts. As the scientific, social and economic challenges associated with the Arctic are immense, research is of paramount importance and scientists play a crucial role in collaboration and cooperation between countries.
Italy boasts a centuries-old history in the Arctic which, from the expedition of the Duke of Abruzzi in 1899 and the missions of Umberto Nobile in 1926-28, continued through the action of explorers and scientists who dedicated their lives to scientific research and to the study of the peoples of the North. Since 1990 universities and research institutions (CNR, ENEA, INGV, OGS) have operated in the region, with results of a high scientific level. This contribution to research in the Arctic, together with the economic interest of some important companies (such as ENI, e-Geos and Fincantieri), formed the basis of the request made to the Arctic Council to obtain observer country status for Italy. Request accepted in 2013.
The purpose of the meeting is to enhance the contribution to the study of the Arctic of Italian research institutions, researchers and Italian companies and the potential of bilateral collaborations.
