"East-West: enemy brothers?"

Are we in a new cold war? What is the origin of the current tensions which oppose the Atlantic democracies to Russia and China? Federico Rampini, Italian essayist based in New York, author of numerous books on this subject, offers a broader perspective on two thousand years of history and the point of view of "the other".

Federico Rampini - Journalist, writer, public speaker and geopolitical analyst, was born in Genoa (Italy) in 1956. Since 2009 he has lived in New York where he is a global columnist for the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera. Previously he was the US Bureau Chief for the newspaper La Repubblica and a White House correspondent, traveling regularly with three Presidents of the United States (Barack Obama, Donald Trump, Joe Biden) and covering international summits: G7, G20, ASEAN, NATO. In 2004 – 2009 he was the China correspondent of La Repubblica. As a special envoy for Asia he covered India, Japan, Southeast Asia, Korea.

From 2000 to 2004 he was West Coast Correspondent and columnist for the global economy of La Repubblica in San Francisco, from that observatory he wrote extensively about the first boom of the digital economy and the “Golden Age” of globalization. From 1997 to 2000 he was the European editor of La Repubblica, covering the launch of the single currency in Brussels and Frankfurt (headquarters of the European Central Bank). From 1986 to 1995 he was correspondent in Paris and deputy director of the Sole-24 Ore in Milano.

He has published more than twenty essays, many of which have been best-selling books in Italy and translated in other European countries. Among his latest works: “The Long Winter” (Mondadori 2022); “The Suicide of the West” (Mondadori 2022); “To Stop Beijing – Understanding China to save the West” (Mondadori 2021); "East and West - Mass and Individual" (Einaudi 2020); "The Second Cold War" (Mondadori 2019). Among his essays translated into other languages are the best-sellers "The Chinese Century" (Mondadori 2005), "The Empire of Chindia" (Mondadori 2006), "The Shadow of Mao" (Mondadori 2008).

He was Visiting Professor at the University of Berkeley, California; and at the Shanghai University of Economics and Finance. He has held seminars and webinars at the SDA-Bocconi Business School in Milan. He has been frequently invited as a guest lecturer at Columbia University and several other US universities. He is a member of the New York-Washington based Council on Foreign Relations, and of the Foreign Policy Association. He is a Principal Expert in Geopolitics, for projects of The European House – Ambrosetti. He has produced a television program (“Geo-history”) for Rai, the Italian public television network.
