An English bourgeois couple arrives in Naples to resolve an inheritance issue. Khaterine (Ingrid Bergman) visits the archaeological museum of the Farnese collection, the surroundings of the city, Cuma, the Solfatare, while Alexandre (George Sanders) leaves for Capri to join her friend Judy. Upon the latter’s return, they become aware of their incommunicability and decide to divorce. This choice makes their visit to Pompeii even more shocking. In one scene, in which the real director of the archaeological excavations, Amedeo Maiuri, acts as an extra, the two witness the discovery of a young Pompeian couple through the famous plaster cast technique.

Considered the main exponent of Neorealism, Roberto Rossellini is one of the masters of cinema worldwide, thanks to his ability to bring together different voices harmonizing them with perfect harmony. A character actor that he himself defined as “chorality.
