Nobody notices them. We barely know their names, we barely recognize their dignity as living beings. Yet any city would be impossible without plants. We live in and through their bodies. Plants have literally created the world in which we live: it is thanks to them that we can eat, it is thanks to them that we can breathe. Gaïa is a vegetable entity: it is a garden, much more than a zoo, and it is only because Gaïa is a garden that we can live in it. Any cosmological speculation must take the form of a botanical reflection.

Emanuele Coccia is Associate Professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences sociales, Paris, since 2011, after being Assistant Professor at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau (2008-2011). He was invited research fellow and professor at the University of Tokyo (2009), Buenos Aires (2010), Düsseldorf (2013) and at the Columbia University (2015-2016). Among his publications: La trasparenza delle immagini. Averroè e l’averroismo (Milan 2005, Spanish translation 2008); La vie sensible (Paris 2010; translated into English, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian) and Le bien dans les choses (Paris 2013; translated into Spanish and Italian; German, English and Portuguese translation forthcoming). With Giorgio Agamben he edited a comprehensive anthology of texts on angels across the Abrahamic traditions (Angeli. Ebraismo Cristianesimo Islam, Vicenza 2009).
