More than half a century ago, the scholar M.O. Tobriner wrote perceptively: “(…) the labor movement of a country cannot be dissected in abstraction. It is as much a reflection of a nation’s culture and history as its art and literature; (...) the social anatomy of a culture is revealed by its component parts. A labor movement is at once an integral segment and reflection of the whole structure.” (“A Lawyer Looks at French and Italian Labor”, Labor Law Journal, 1953, vol. 4, no. 9 (September), p. 613. September). By moving just from this consideration, the conference program focuses on the complex issue of work and in particular on implementing policies, Mutation of law and the diversity of production environments in Italy.

Domenico Carrieri analyses two fundamental aspects for the study of the Italian culture of work. First, he studies the longitudinal trend of trade union reputation among Italian employees. Several factors are analyzed to shed light on changes over time. Second, he focuses on the relationship between trade unions and changing configuration of parties over time. Two aspects that much contribute to explaining the development of Italian unionism.

Domenico Carrieri is full professor of Economic Sociology at the Department of Social and Economic Sciences of the University of Rome "La Sapienza". He is currently President of the Italian Association for the Study of Industrial Relations (AISRI). From June 2016 he is a member of the labor strike guarantee of essential services board. He is the author of studies and publications on changing work and on industrial relations scenarios and policies. Among his most recent works: Verso nuove relazioni industriali (with T. Treu, Il Mulino, 2013); La partecipazione incisiva (Il Mulino, 2015); Al bivio. Lavoro, sindacato e rappresentanza nell'Italia di oggi (with P. Feltrin, Donzelli, 2016).
