The meeting between Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt took place eight centuries ago, in 1219. More than celebrating a centenary, the cycle of conferences, conceived by the Italian Cultural Institute and by the Center d'études médiévales of the Université de Montréal, bringing together scholars of various disciplines, all of high profile and international fame, wants to bring the public closer to the meaning of this extraordinary event for contemporaries and posterity.

Franco Cardini, historian of the Middle Ages among the greatest of our time, is, among other things, a keen and prolific scholar of the history of the Crusades, the pilgrimage and the relations between East and West. Among his recent books, we remember at least: In Terrasanta: pellegrini italiani tra Medioevo e prima età moderna (Bologna, Il Mulino, 2002), and Nella presenza del Soldan superba: saggi francescani (Spoleto, CISAM, 2009), Europa e Islam. Storia di un malinteso (Rome-Bari, Laterza, 2018).
