Giornate del Contemporaneo-Italian Contemporary Art: “Luciano Ventrone: the Caravaggio of the twentieth century?”, conference by Alessandro Giardino (Saint Lawrence University, Canton, NY, USA)

On the occasion of the second edition of the “Giornate del Contemporaneo – Italian Contemporary Art” (October 7th to 12th, 2019), the Italian Cultural Institute of Montreal and the Han Art Gallery are pleased to present Prof. Alessandro Giardino’s conference entitled “Luciano Ventrone: the Caravaggio of the twentieth century?“.

From the 1st to the 15th of October the Han Art Gallery will host some works of the immense artistic production of Luciano Ventrone. The exhibition thus becomes an opportunity for Alessandro Giardino to spend time on the originality of the work and at the same time on the similarities and differences between Caravaggio and Ventrone, although both remain vivid consciousness of their time.

Alessandro Giardino, (Ph.D., McGill 2013) is Assistant Professor of Italian & Francophone Studies, and Coordinator of European Studies at St. Lawrence University, NY. His research covers early modern visual culture and intellectual history, Mediterranean literature in Italian and French, French philosophy, and psychoanalysis. He has written for collective volumes and journals. His most recent articles have appeared in NeMLA Italian Studies, Mnemosyne, Aries, Cuadernos de Filologia Italiana, The Italianist, and Quaderni di Italianistica. His book Giorgio Bassani. Percorsi dello sguardo nelle arti visive (G. Pozzi, 2013) was awarded the Roberto Nissim-Haggiag Prize and recently he has published the book Corporeality and Performativity in Baroque Naples: The Body of Naples (Rowman&Littlefield, 2017).

The festival “Giornate del Contemporaneo – Italian Contemporary Art”, organized this year for the second time, in conjunction with the “Contemporary Day” held in Italy since 2005 by AMACI and MIBACT, it aims to promote the artistic heritage abroad contemporary Italian, expressed with the different languages of painting, sculpture, video, installations, photography, design, etc., as part of the integrated promotion mission of the Country System.
