“The travelling Genius”, Carlotta Colarieti: “Independent publishers in Italy: the case of effe – Periodico di Altre Narratività.”

The series of encounters entitled “The travelling Genius: Italians Art, humanities, science … in the world“, is a space for discussion and cultural dialogue that the Italian Cultural Institute has developed especially for young Italians in world. Italians who, beyond any orientation, are the bearers of knowledge accumulated in Italy and diffuse the following, even without their knowledge, a provision or a vocation of ancient origin: the generous exchange of culture, comforted by a keen sense of human comprehension.

effe – Periodico di Altre Narratività is a biannual anthology of unedited illustrated short stories that involves, on each issue, well-known writers alongside emerging authors or novices at their first publication. The project was born in 2012 to probe the moods of the literary scene, becoming a showcase for novice author and a space for experimentation for well-known writers, thanks to a careful scouting carried out by Flanerí’s staff in collaboration with 42Linee, which also deals with the editorial care of each volume. The anthology, whose editorial staff is made up of young professionals from the publishing world, is not only a good springboard for beginners or a free zone for well-known authors, but also a tool for professionals and for the readers, who can discover and read new names, beyond the traditional publishing circuits.

effe is a traveling project: each issue is presented around Italy, (in more than forty independent bookshops that support the anthology) together with the authors. An operation that has a specific purpose: to promote all the writers (with greater attention to the novices), sharing stories and creating discussions around fiction. Before the debut pages, authors such as Luciano Funetta (Tunué), Elisa Casseri (Elliot), Gianni Agostinelli (Del Vecchio), Marzia Grillo (Elliot), Athos Zontini (Bompiani) and Alessandra Minervini (LiberAria) have passed their debut, and already established writers such as Matteo Nucci, Paolo Zardi, Demetrio Paolin, Vins Gallico, Carla Vasio, Luca Ricci and Paolo Cognetti. Every short story on effe is read and illustrated by young Italian creatives of international reputation such as Lucamaleonte, Andreco, Darkam, Paolo Cattaneo and Alina Vergnano. Beginning with the experience of effe – Periodico di Altre Narratività, during the meeting we will talk about the state of health of Italian publishing, independent editorial projects, the importance of scouting and the future of paper publications.

Carlotta Colarieti was born in Rome, where she lives and works. She is an editor for 42Linee and the curator of effe – Periodico di Altre Narratività. She is currently in New York, where she is working in rights field at independent publishing house Seven Stories Press and at Am-book agency.
