«The travelling Genius», Alessandra Loria – “The global ecological crisis as within, as without”

The series of encounters entitled “The travelling Genius : Italians Art, humanities, science … in the world”, is a space for discussion and cultural dialogue that the Italian Cultural Institute has developed especially for young Italians in world. Italians who, beyond any orientation, are the bearers of knowledge accumulated in Italy and diffuse the following, even without their knowledge, a provision or a vocation of ancient origin: the generous exchange of culture, comforted by a keen sense of human comprehension.

Mother Nature is being increasingly threatened by the human species. Environmental degradation, climate change, eutrophication, invasive species and over-exploitation are only the top-5 factors that are increasingly threatening global biodiversity. This is the Age of Anthropocene, the Age of the sixth mass extinction. However, the effects of the global ecological crisis are affecting, slowly but inexorably, even humans and if there will be no major management changes, we too must “awaken or die”. But awaken from what? Alessandra will talk about one of the biggest problems at the root of our deep disregard for the environment and the consequences of our actions.

Alessandra is a marine biologist specializing in ecology, evolution and conservation of biodiversity. Her three year thesis and specialist studied the effects of eutrophication on Sardinian lagoon ecosystems. A McGill graduate student from 2013 where she deals with the demographic and evolutionary effects of heavy metal zooplankton pollution on freshwater. Alessandra has a great passion for psychology, spirituality and personal growth.
